WABC-FM became WPLJ in early 1971.

The FM radio band, even though around for decades by 1971, is still growing in 1971. AM is still a big factor, especially in cars and transistor radios. Exposure to FM, for the average listener, is also still growing in 1971.

WABC AM is still doing very well in 1971. I don't think they would tinker with a move over to the FM band at that time.

Where AM stations were starting to feel the rise of FM was later on in the decade, probably starting around 1975 and definitely by the end of the 70s with stations like WKTU and 99X emerging on the scene.

By this time also, WPLJ was a very successful AOR station.
