I have to recount the story of the WKRP episode -- I didn't see it -- when both Venus Flytrap and Dr. Johnny Fever tried to stage something quite similar on the air.

Reportedly, the more Venus got blasted, the more LUCID Fever became! That would've been one heckuva gag.

I did catch the 1974 Ted Brown installment. Someone here would know if that was the first year Brown performed this wonderful, altruistic sacrifice for the listening public.
You folks know I abhor name-dropping. But when I called the WNEW studio and asked Julie if a :07 second delay was going to be used, he seemed surprised that a safety measure like that would be considered. He got back to me and said, in surprise, that yes ; there would be one used.

Brown lasted for a while -- I forget the duration ... an hour? -- before the :07 second delay was called to duty. Remember now, this was in the days where AM DJs talked after every song. So every time Ted Brown spoke, it was his duty to quaff one down. Finally, at the end of this heroism, in a slurred voice, he made some mildly lascivious remark about 'that girl drummer' (Karen Carpenter) and then there was silence for several seconds. Reportedly, Ted Brown tossed his breakfast (if he'd had a breakfast) and maybe his lunch, plus most of that fifth.
