Growing up in the metro-NYC area's northern suburban counties, I remember stumbling upon 66 WNBC's "Time Machine" in the late '80s while in high school and into my first year at a community college. My father and I were restoring a '69 VW Beetle that had been in our driveway for some 7 years, going back to roughly the years when I was first introduced to the WNBC of Imus, Soupy Sales and Stern as a middle-schooler. Before the brake job replacement (the emergency brake had been left on and was rusted into position: we used a pole to "break the nut"), and before bolting in an engine replacement later that summer from a donor Volkswagen, I'd sit in the driver's seat and put on the radio and imagine my future travels in what would be my first car of my own.

So I remember fondly one late spring or summer, evening (it was probably June, come to think of it), it was very star-lit, beautiful clear night with a moon, the type of night you can only get further out in the country where street lights and urban density doesn't drown out the sky.

I happened upon the most incredible music, the echo-sound, jingles and DJ's on WNBC, which I hadn't listened to in years. I was captivated by it and immediately likened it to the fast-paced and fun sound of the late great Music Radio 77 WABC I first heard as early as my birth year, the same year as the Bug. I started to make a habit of visiting the car peridically at night (the project dragged on forever) and would spend time listening to what to my mind was a fantastic and lively WNBC. (I had no idea it was the end of an era with the station's demise around the corner.)

Once we finally got that car running by summer's end, I was always looking to take a joy ride on that "Time Machine" on any of my night-time drives. After all, it was the best thing on the car's stock AM-only dial, in glorious mono, coming in loud and clear.
